Old Saybrook Memorial Day cemetery tour honoring veterans

OLD SAYBROOK — In observance of Memorial Day, the Old Saybrook Historical Society is sponsoring a guided tour of the Upper Cemetery, North Main Street, Old Saybrook, Sunday, May 26 at 4 p.m. to honor the veterans from America’s conflicts.

Scott Carson, a member of the Old Saybrook Municipal Cemetery, who has conducted extensive research on the cemetery and its final resting places, will lead the guided tour.

The 2.7 acres that comprise the cemetery are the final resting place for 48 identified veterans from the French and Indian War, American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War and beyond.

It holds the remains of many of Saybrook’s most prominent families, including Bushnell, Whittlesey, Clarke, Chalker, Spencer along with Thomas Acton (1823-1898), a New York City politician and reformer and Old Saybrook summer resident, after whom the library is named.

Here, too, is the headstone memorializing “Fero, the faithful slave of William Lynde who died March 20, 1801, AE 72 yrs.”
