Touring Cypress Cemetery – A New Look at Old Stone
“Touring Cypress Cemetery: A New Look at Old Stone.”
Historian J. H. Torrance Downes, a member of the Old Saybrook Historical Society, narrates a 10 minute video about funerary art. This is artwork carved onto the historic tombstones located in the old burial portion of the cemetery, laid out in 1635. Torrance points out notable examples of the earliest American colonial tombstone artists. These carvers and the art they produced are the reason for the cemetery being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
